It is well known that Baja California Sur is the state with the longest coastline in all of Mexico and, it is not surprising that one of the main commercial activities is fishing. Historically, fishing in the Baja has been both a way of subsistence and of recreation.
Kayak Fishing has now become a very popular activity in the bay of Loreto. Early mornings will find the locals out looking for the big catch. This pleasant and healthy activity is also garnering a lot of attention from young people drawn to the charms that kayak fishing offers.
The lightweight nature of a kayak allows the fishermen to nimbly move about in pursuit of the fish as well as the ability to "troll" the bay at their own pace. The kayak fishing has become a regular occurrence often being observed by locals and tourists alike from Loreto's main pier.
According to one young Loreto fisherman, about three years ago, some foreign residents were the ones who brought this new style of fishing to Loreto. The ability to stay close to shore but still bring in sizeable fish became one of the main draws of kayak fishing as well as the ability to avoid the expense and noise of a boat engine.
The great weather in Loreto allows for kayak fishing year round. All of the local beaches offer a great starting point but the most popular are Coronado beach and Danzante Bay. These locations offer crystal clear waters over white sands and coral outcroppings allowing Anglers to spot and identify the wealth of fish species in this spectacular marine ecosystem and, once again, highlighting the natural beauty of this destination nestled in the heart of the Sea of Cortez.
